Zong Liang

Zong Liang was born in Taiwan into a house at a time of no electronics and her mother didn’t allow friends to come over to play. In this isolation, Zong played with ants and other small creatures. At age nine, she immigrated to the United States and spoke almost no English. Her high school art teacher sparked a love for art but later a career as an engineer paid the rent. As her family grew, she decided to stay home with her eight children. Zong sketched many comic strips for them, some with small animals.

Inspiration for “Mommy Where am I?”:

While sketching at my desk by the window, keeping an eye on the kids playing in the backyard, I noticed an ant walking over my sketches. I wondered, “If an ant walks over a photo of a forest, does he believe he’s in a forest? If he walks over a photo of the Arctic, does he feel cold? What does he think if he walks over a Matisse painting? What is he thinking walking on my sketch?” Then the idea was born of the adventures of a mother ant and her daughter in an art museum.
